Large battery storage systems are already supporting the energy transition by temporarily storing surplus energy from wind and sun, trending towards larger battery storage systems. In order to minimize losses, the KV-Bat-Syst research project is investigating a high-voltage battery that significantly reduces the power required for the same amount of stored energy. The topology of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) is being investigated, which is capable of blocking even very high voltages and thus makes the operation of a high-voltage battery possible in the first place.
Tasks and goals
- Literature research, overview of the state of the art
- Investigate possible components for an MMC circuit
- Designing and investigating a MMC stack
- Simulation of a MMC stack and calculation of overvoltage & losses
- Investigation of snubber circuit and control if necessary
- Goal: Concept and simulation of MMC topology as storage power converter for a high voltage battery up to 10kV
requirements:

Attendance of the lectures Power Electronics (or comparable course)

Experience with simulation tools like Matlab or Octave
